Like a Time Machine: Thrift Culture and Fashion
When I think about thrift culture, it always reminds me of how we used to share our toys as kids. Back then, I sometimes couldn’t own the toy I loved the most, but if a friend had it and let me play with it, the joy was indescribable. Today, whenever I find a second-hand piece that I truly love, I feel exactly the same.
Sometimes, we are not really born into “our own time,” or the style of our era doesn’t resonate with who we are. That’s why thrifting, to me, feels like a time machine. It brings pieces of the past into the present and allows us to wear stories that don’t belong only to this moment.
I understand why people follow trends, but I deeply admire those who adjust fashion to time itself. Taking outfits from decades ago and adapting them to today feels like a higher level of fashion intelligence.
And here’s another thought: I am someone who tends to romanticize life. Maybe that’s why I believe that “clothes find us.” Think about it… A piece of clothing may have been sitting in someone else’s wardrobe for years. Dozens of people may have walked past it without noticing. And suddenly, you see it — you value it, and it becomes yours.
But this isn’t only about thrifting. It’s about life itself. People are like that too. Every person is valuable, but only a few people in our lives truly recognize this. The way mechanisms work in life is fascinating to me. Sometimes we see it in nature, sometimes in thrift stores, sometimes in human relationships. The key is to know how to see it.
